      • message<p> I was in 5th grade when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. As many of you, I can vividly remember that day and exactly where I was when I heard the news. The teachers were huddled in a corner of the classroom crying. The talk during lunchtime was about what effect JFK&rsquo;s death would have on our country&rsquo;s government, including the transfer of power from Kennedy to Lyndon Johnson. I watched the funeral and remember the moment that John-John saluted &ndash; a photo that has gone down in history.<br /> While JFK&rsquo;s assassination has become one of the outstanding events in November on the American calendar, Jewish history also stops this month to remember with the commemoration of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. The date was November 9, 1938. More than two hundred synagogues were destroyed, and thousands of Jewish businesses and homes were ransacked and damaged. Among the synagogues affected by Kristallnacht was the synagogue in Hanover, Germany. The little Torah with the red cover that takes its place in our ark along with the other large Torahs is a remnant of that synagogue and Kristallnacht. My uncle, Leopold Gruenbaum, was the caretaker of that synagogue. He and my aunt, Aenne, lived above the synagogue in a small apartment. After the events of November 8, 1938, my uncle went down to see what he could salvage from the devastation. He brought up the small Torah, written by hand as are all kosher scrolls, made a new cover for it, attached one of my aunt&rsquo;s broaches from her costume jewelry collection, and guarded that Torah for 40 years. <br /> The Gruenbaums were fortunate to be able to escape Germany, and they settled in Los Angeles. My mother and I took pleasure in visiting with them, and it was on one of these visits after my uncle died that we discovered that this Torah existed. My aunt simply said one day, &ldquo;You know, I have something that you might be interested in.&rdquo; She went to her linen closet and returned cradling the little Torah. &ldquo;This belongs in a synagogue, not in my home.&rdquo; We removed the cover and laid eyes on a remarkable wimple (the belt used to tie the two scrolls together) and the text of our Torah. The wimple was hand painted in honor of the brit milah (circumcision) of someone who would now be 149 years old! It is an amazing piece of artwork that is signed by the artist and dedicated on that very special occasion. If only that Torah could talk &hellip;<br /> November is one of my favorite months of the year. Not because of the anniversary of JFK&rsquo;s death and not even because of Thanksgiving (although I love the opportunity for family and friends to get together &hellip; and eat!). November is the month when I look at the Little Red Torah that lives at Temple Beth Tikvah, my Jewish Home. That Torah reunites me with my ancestors, those who perished at the hands of the Nazis, as well as with Aenne and Leopold, who bravely saved a piece of our Jewish heritage and brought it to the United States, where it is safe to live as a Jew.</p>

      • message<p>Putting politics aside, no one can deny that Tuesday&rsquo;s election of Barack Obama was a turning point in American history and a very special and significant moment for our nation. Clearly, the overwhelming majority of voters wanted to go in a different direction &ndash; evident by the fact that even Senator McCain co-opted the &ldquo;change&rdquo; message, running away from the current administration. No matter the President-elect&rsquo;s policies and appointments, the very fact of his election is change in-itself.</p> <p>Senator Obama&rsquo;s election to the highest office in our land did not happen in a vacuum. It was the result of a very long and arduous journey that in many ways began centuries ago when the first African slaves were brought to these shores. It was the result of the Emancipation Proclamation signed into law by President Lincoln, whose 200^th anniversary of birth we will celebrate next year. It was the result of a journey by his African-born father, who fell in love with his Kansas-born mother. It was the result of all the struggles, the highs and lows, of the 1960s in which Jews played a major role, some even paying the ultimate price in the name of equal rights and freedom for all.</p> <p>I would even argue that it all began in this week&rsquo;s Torah portion, Lech L&rsquo;cha, when Avram (whose life and name is later transformed) is told by God to &ldquo;go forth.&rdquo; That first journey by the first Jew set the course of history for the Jewish people and for what is today the Western world and the ideas of freedom and democracy. We are the ones who have always taught that every human being is created in the image of God. It is our story of Exodus, our journey from slavery to Sinai, that inspired those whites and blacks, Jews and gentiles, northerners and southerners, to march arm-in-arm in protest of the status quo and to demand change. Together they sang, &ldquo;We shall overcome,&rdquo; and in many ways, finally, finally, we can say, &ldquo;We have overcome.&rdquo;</p> <p>Will bigotry disappear? Of course not. Will anti-Semitism and racism vanish? No. Does our nation continue to face enormous challenges and hurdles? Yes. But in the same way the horrible events of September 11, 2001 changed us and the world, the inspiring and historic events of November 4, 2008 have and will continue to change us as well as we continue Abraham&rsquo;s journey.</p> <p>After every election, I am always curious and fascinated by what the pundits call the &ldquo;Jewish vote.&rdquo; We are a mere 2% of the population of the United States, and yet they speak of our voting block as though it were as powerful as the Catholic vote, the Evangelical vote, or the Black vote, groups that all outnumber us by some 5-20 times. In case you are interested Senator Obama received 78% of the Jewish vote and Senator McCain 22%. There are now 13 Jewish senators (and there will be regardless of who wins the recount in Minnesota as both Norm Coleman and Al Franken are Jewish), and 31 Jewish Members of Congress. Now not all Jews who ran for Congressional office won, including a Latina Jew, a Chinese Jew, and a blind rabbi (yes, it&rsquo;s true!). However, the new representative from the Denver area is not only Jewish but the first ever openly gay man to be elected to Congress. So, despite our small numbers, we are well represented in our government, something which we can be very proud of, honored, and humbled by.</p> <p>Tonight at Temple we will have our Family Shabbat Service at 7:00 PM including birthday and anniversary blessings for November. Tomorrow, religious school, Torah Study, and our Shabbat morning services as usual.       • message<p> Now that the election is over, the Monday morning quarterbacking has begun. If you don&rsquo;t like that analogy, you can also say that the post-mortem has begun, or simply that the analysis of what happened has begun. Whatever metaphor you prefer, there is no doubt that 2008 will go down as one of the most interesting elections in history. <br /> However you voted on Proposition 8, I am sure that many of you, like me, were surprised that it passed. California is known as a very liberal state with very liberal attitudes towards personal conduct and individual rights. Barack Obama won the state overwhelmingly and yet this proposition also passed, albeit narrowly. The analysis I have seen points to two voting blocks that voted heavily in favor of the proposition: African Americans (who came out in droves to vote to Obama) and Latinos (who are overwhelmingly Catholic). And, it is no secret that most of the money behind the &ldquo;Yes on 8&rdquo; campaign came from the Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. <br /> I have not seen the exact figures, but I think I am safe in saying that while most Orthodox Jews probably voted in favor of the proposition, most Reform and probably most Conservative Jews, especially those who are younger, voted against it. As I have been on record for many years in favor of gay rights, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I (along with the Pacific Association of Reform Rabbis and the Union for Reform Judaism) was against it. <br /> The issue for me is simple: equality. Either the laws of our state and country apply to everyone or they don&rsquo;t. Yes, I know what the Torah says. I also know what it doesn&rsquo;t say. The Jewish institution of marriage as we know it today was established in rabbinic times and changed over the centuries. True, from a Jewish perspective, marriage was reserved for one Jewish man and one Jewish woman, but what Jewish law or tradition, or any other religious structure has to say about it is not the point. <br /> Marriage in the United States is a civil matter, not a religious one. Laura and I are married not because we stood under a Chuppah and signed a Ketubah. We are married because the State of California says we are married. This right should be extended to any other eligible couple, gay or straight. <br /> Just as we would not amend the California Constitution to prohibit marriage between a Jew and non-Jew, or to compel everyone to keep kosher or observe Shabbat on Saturday, we cannot impose our religious views on the entire population. The Mormons, Catholics, and Evangelicals should realize this as well and not impose their views on others, especially on civil matters. <br /> This is the first instance I can remember where an existing Constitutional right was taken away from a group of people. The Constitution of the United States and of California exists to protect minority rights, to protect less popular views and opinions from mob rule. Majority rights do not need protection. Our Torah specifically mentions that we must be mindful of the widow, the orphan, the young, and the old. It does not say that we should be mindful of strong, able-bodied men. Why? Because they were (and have always been) in the position of power. <br /> Similarly, we did not need a Voting Rights Act to ensure that White Men could vote. Most laws, especially civil rights laws, come to fruition to protect the rights of minorities from the majority. <br /> I am deeply troubled that our fellow Californians did not or could not understand this concept. I am also puzzled as to how something that has already been declared constitutional by the California Supreme Court could be overturned by the will of the people. What if voters wanted to overturn Brown vs. Board of Education? What if voters wanted to ban inter-religious or inter-racial marriage? What if a majority wanted to bring back Blue Laws, or to impose their narrowly-interpreted religious views on the entire population? <br /> I know that some of you may disagree on various points for a variety of reasons, but I&rsquo;d like to ask you to think about this long and hard and to think about history. Think about Jewish history and American history. Think about all the progress we have made in this country. We now have an African-American President-Elect, something many thought they would never see in their lifetime. Despite his election, here in California, voters have also taken away a basic human and civil right from a minority group. If they can do it to gays, they can also do it to Jews.</p>

      • message<p>As you by now know, the congregational meeting originally planned for last month has been postponed until the second or third week in January, 2009. Information related to three major issues was not complete at that time, and we would have had to call another meeting to vote on these issues. Below are the items that will require your approval, to be raised at the coming meeting:<br />1. It is our intent to sign a lease with the Unitarian Congregation for more than two years. We have negotiated a lease with the UUCF (the Unitarian congregation that meets at TBT) deemed fair by both parties. We are still working on the wording of one particular paragraph and should have that completed in the next couple of weeks. Any lease signed by Temple Beth Tikvah for longer than two years must be approved by our congregation.<br />2. It is our intent to use surplus funds in our Cemetery Fund Restricted Account to help fund the construction of the Asa Center for Lifetime Jewish Learning. A congregational vote is needed for us to do so.<br />3. The monies that you have individually pledged for Project Legacy will be paid over a period of up to five years. Payment to the contractor will be due by the end of construction, which is estimated to be ten months from beginning to end. A short term loan is needed to fully fund the project within that ten month period We are awaiting the final bids from all sub-contractors to determine exactly how large of a loan we will need. Permission to secure a loan must be granted by the congregation.<br />You will receive a letter sent by first-class mail informing you of the exact date for the upcoming Congregational Meeting. As always, I am available for your questions. You may also contact Project Legacy Co-chairs Lila Pesner or Henry Cohen. In the meantime I want to wish you and your family a happy and healthy Chanukah.</p>

      • message<p> In November we prepared for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, from turkeys to Indians (Wampanoag native Americans to be exact.) The 2 to early 4 year olds experienced what it was like to be turkeys and various forest animals roaming the early American forest.<br /> The 2&rsquo;s and the early 4&rsquo;s also spent a lot of time learning about themselves. Their focus was their hands. The two classrooms made a delightful book called "What hands are for..."<br /> The children learned that hands are for hugging, not hitting. This is a very important concept to know when you are two years old. I think if some adults had the opportunity to learn this concept, it would be a much nicer world. <br /> The Pre-K and the Kindergarteners immersed themselves in the lifestyle of the Wampanoag pronounced (wamp o nog), who were the Native Americans who met and helped the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. We divided into three tribes under the banner of the Wampanaog Nation. The children learned the basics of how a Wampanaog lived, from fishing for salmon in the ocean and local rivers to hunting with our very own bow and arrows. We have learned to respect all life and always remembering to give thanks to the animal for giving their life for us. <br /> The children made their own clay pots and beaded their own headbands and necklaces. They came together and built their nations homes called Wetus.<br />We then went to Heritage Park in Norwalk and were able to interact with a Native American exhibit. It is a nice feeling to know that we stayed true to the early American experience.<br /> We finished this entire unit with a wonderful Thanksgiving Feast and performance. Fun was had by all!!<br /> Thank you to all parents who supported our school with the cookie dough fundraiser - every little bit helps.<br /> We are preparing for a Chanukah performance on December 17, at 10:00 a.m. for ORT. The children look forward to this day.</p>

      • message<p> Recently the teachers and I attended the Fall Seminar sponsored by the Jewish Educators&rsquo; Association of Orange County (of which I am a past-president). The theme of the seminar was, &ldquo;Removing the Stumbling Blocks to Learning.&rdquo; Our topic dealt with learning differences and disabilities that cause frustration, anxiety, and tension for our students as well as teachers and parents. <br /> I could relate to the movie we watched, &ldquo;How Difficult Can This Be?&rdquo; in which a facilitator leads a group of adults through activities that simulate learning disabilities.<br /> I could relate to the discussion led by Amy Kadell, administrator for the Full Inclusion Preschool Project and owner/director of Little Bridges, a program that runs social skills groups for children with autism and other social delays. Strategies were shared for working with disabilities, and participants shared concerns and tools they use in the classroom.<br /> I could relate to the parents of children with learning differences, who participated on a panel. They shared their experiences in both the secular and Jewish communities, and gave us valuable tips on how they have worked with their children and their schools to improve the quality of their children&rsquo;s education.<br /> The most important message that I came away with from everything I heard at the seminar was that the greatest gift we can give LD students is the gift of time. And that &ldquo;fair&rdquo; doesn&rsquo;t mean giving each child the same attention, but rather, it means giving each child what that particular child needs to be successful.<br /> Chanukah is almost upon us. The Hebrew word chanukah means &ldquo;dedicate.&rdquo; Just as our ancestors &ldquo;dedicated&rdquo; the synagogue following the Assyrian revolt, the holiday is meant to give us the opportunity to dedicate ourselves anew to our Jewish heritage. Each of us carries a torch in the transmission of Judaism from one generation to the next. We stand on the shoulders of the ones who came before us. No two people are the same, and yet we each are created in God&rsquo;s image. We each have strengths and weaknesses, and we all are partners in the renewal of the universe, day by day.<br /> May this Chanukah bring brightness to your home and to your life. May we dedicate ourselves to improving our world by recognizing the gifts that we each possess and that we give to each other &hellip; by our appreciation for our differences as well as our similarities.</p>

      • message<p>As Jews, we are constantly reminded of the power of God and nature.&nbsp; Throughout our prayers and rituals, we praise God as Ruler of the Universe, and many of our holidays, tied to the seasons and the natural order, recognize our place in that universe as mere mortals.&nbsp; Every 12-step program that I am aware of begins with the recognition and realization that there is something greater than oneself.&nbsp; <br /><br />There is nothing like a personal experience to drive that point home.&nbsp; Last month, I was attempting to return to Southern California from Las Vegas.&nbsp; Attempting is the key word here.&nbsp; I had boarded the airplane and the flight attendants had gone through the safety briefing.&nbsp; It was snowing outside lightly, but as the minutes progressed, the snow became heavier and heavier.&nbsp; First the flight was delayed; then we were told that we could exit the airplane if we wished to do so.&nbsp; Eventually, we were told that everyone had to go back to the terminal.&nbsp; Some time later, the flight was cancelled and shortly after that, it was announced that the airport was shut down for the night and that everyone had to re-book their flights for the next day (if they were lucky).&nbsp; <br /><br />It was a total free-for-all as people with kids and seniors in wheelchairs scrambled for information.&nbsp; No one knew what to do or where to go.&nbsp; Different people told us different things.&nbsp; Eventually I made my way back to the ticketing counter where I waited in line for three and a half hours to rebook my flight for the following morning.&nbsp; I was lucky that there was a seat available on the 6:00 AM flight, so I stayed awake all night to catch that flight.&nbsp; Let me tell you, you meet some very interesting people at the airport in the middle of the night.&nbsp; Fortunately, I was stuck in Vegas where the slot machines helped pass the time as well.&nbsp; <br /><br />This experience starkly reminded me of the power of nature.&nbsp; A mere three and a half inches of snow (and zero visibility), the worst storm ever in December in Las Vegas, brought the airport to a halt and stranded thousands of people.&nbsp; Normally, when I fly, I think about the airplane and about the systems that have to all come together to get me where I need to be.&nbsp; This time, my attention was focused on the people involved: the pilots and gate agents, the maintenance crews and counter employees.&nbsp; I was completely at their mercy.&nbsp; For a time standing in that long line, I felt totally helpless, wondering if and when I would ever get home.&nbsp; I recalled the many times I saw this episode reported on television and how sorry I felt for those people.&nbsp; Now, those people were me!&nbsp; <br /><br />As a Jew and a rabbi, I try to look for the lesson in every experience, and this was no exception.&nbsp; One lesson could be, don&rsquo;t go to Las Vegas; just stay home!&nbsp; That certainly would be wise advice sometimes.&nbsp; But a better lesson is to appreciate even more the power of nature and our place in the universe as humans.&nbsp; We think we have so much power, that all our technology can help us do whatever we want.&nbsp; Sometimes we have to be reminded of our limitations, of our mortality, that we are really as infinitely small as a grain of sand on a beach.&nbsp; <br /><br />When I was in the thick of that situation, I wished to be somewhere, almost anywhere else.&nbsp; Having &ldquo;survived&rdquo; and now looking back, it wasn&rsquo;t really that bad.&nbsp; And most importantly, it reinforced for me a crucial lesson.&nbsp; It just goes to show you, you can learn and experience Torah anywhere, any time, and in any situation.</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; It seems a bit awkward to wish everyone a &ldquo;Happy Secular New Year&rdquo; and so I will just wish everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. Along with the many blessings of 2008, we seemed to have had more than our fair share of tsuris. I don&rsquo;t know that we had an inordinate number of illnesses and misfortune, but it sure seems like we did. 2008 even saw me glimpsing a view of my own mortality. However, being an optimist, I expect to report an inordinate amount of good fortune and health for all of us in 2009.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; 2009. This will be the year that sees Project Legacy become a reality. All the hard work, the planning, the dreaming, and all the hard work still ahead of us will lead to the completion of the Asa Center for Lifetime Jewish Learning and transform Temple Beth Tikvah into a place where we will have the facilities and classrooms to match the outstanding education given to our children. All things become possible when we look to our future and realize we will have the capability to expand Programming and Adult Education. We will have a campus that we can and will be proud of and I am convinced that new families will join us when they see what we have to offer, both with our &ldquo;Spirit of Welcoming&rdquo; and our beautiful facility.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; To be sure, this year will be the most exciting and the most challenging in the history of TBT. We will endure inconveniences as construction begins. There will be times when we will lose parking. Our Social Hall will become classrooms. We will be creative and innovative. We will be patient and understanding and in the toughest of days, we will keep our eyes on our goal. This year will be a test of our &ldquo;Sense of Community&rdquo; and I have no doubt that together we will finish the dream that Haim and Elaine Asa had more than 40 years ago of making and keeping Temple Beth Tikvah as the center of Jewish learning in North Orange County. That is a worthy dream and I know that many share that dream with the Asas.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; The path that has taken us this far has not always been smooth. There have been adjustments made when circumstances warranted it. We have been rightly challenged by a few of our congregants who questioned parts of the project and we have tried to objectively answer those challenges. We have diligently been as transparent as possible and responded to those who did not feel there was enough transparency. I have always answered every question asked of me as honestly as possible and I have admitted when I didn&rsquo;t have an answer. Many of you know that a Congregational Meeting planned for the middle of December was postponed until the middle of February. That was done so that we could bring more accurate financial numbers to you. The final construction drawings should be completed within a week or so of your reading this column. We will then start the bidding process and should be able to know very quickly where the bids are landing in comparison to the architect&rsquo;s projection. We fully expect the difficult economic times we are experiencing to translate into at least a 10% &ndash; 15% reduction in construction costs.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; We will then plug those numbers into our budgetary plan to know how much of a short-term construction loan will be needed, and when we ask you for permission to obtain that construction loan, we will come to you with a complete plan. We have reached 85% of our fundraising goal. Truthfully, we have raised almost the entire amount needed for construction. Our shortfall is basically the amount of interest needed to repay the construction loan. The more cash we have up front, the less we will have to borrow. Remember, your pledges are due over a period of time up to five years, but the construction will be completed in less than one year. The difference between the cash we have on hand and the total amount of your pledges is the amount we will have to borrow. Your help is still vital. If you can pay more of your pledge in advance we will be able to borrow less. Please, if you have not yet made your pledge or if you can raise your existing pledge, contact us. Whatever your pledge amount is, I implore you to make it and have this project be funded with 100% participation. Pledges made will also help fund the furnishings needed.&nbsp;</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; I can envision the day, later this year, when Haim and Elaine walk across to the new building and place a mezuzah on the front door. It is only with your support that this vision finally becomes reality.</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; It&rsquo;s a new (secular) year, and that means it&rsquo;s time for [groan] &ldquo;New Year&rsquo;s Resolutions.&rdquo; There are religious parallels to this secular tradition. For example, in Judaism's holiest holiday, Yom Kippur, one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. The concept is to reflect upon self-improvement annually.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I took a look on the internet (my other Bible), and found one study that listed the most popular goals (let&rsquo;s see how I&rsquo;m doing):<br />1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lose weight (I&rsquo;ve lost 22 lbs. since July &ndash; another 30 to go)<br />2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pay off debt/s (I can&rsquo;t resist a good sale &hellip; but I&rsquo;m trying) <br />3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Save money (thank God for automatic debit)<br />4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Get a better job (impossible &ndash; TBT is my life!)<br />5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Get fit (I get an &ldquo;F&rdquo; in this category)<br />6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Eat right (see #1)<br />7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Get a better education (I&rsquo;m always up for learning more)<br />8.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Drink less alcohol (smaller than those little kiddush cups??)<br />9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Quit smoking (one vice I don&rsquo;t have to worry about)<br />10.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Reduce stress overall (my blood pressure is fine)<br />11.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Reduce stress at work (as long as I stay organized, I can juggle my various hats and stay happy)<br />12.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Take a trip (taking my kids on vacation this summer ;going to San Antonio for my annual conference in August)<br />13.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Volunteer to help others (something I love to do anyway) <br />14.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; LOVE MY MAN (uh, this might be a problem given my current status!)<br />15.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don't drink any soda pop for the whole year (how did THIS one get to be so important??)<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; Actually, I don&rsquo;t make secular New Year&rsquo;s resolutions. I try to make the most of each day, and my favorite thing to do at night before falling asleep is to reflect on the day and ask myself what I did to make the world a better place. I know it sounds corny, but I get a good feeling from it. I&rsquo;ve taken this concept to our junior congregation on Shabbat morning, and have asked our students to reflect on the week that has just passed. It&rsquo;s amazing to hear their answers, whether the week brought lots of positives, or whether there were things that could have been better. There are times when we are so busy that we don&rsquo;t have time to breathe and take an audit of our lives. I certainly don&rsquo;t want to wait until someone else does it for me as part of a eulogy, so I do it for myself, and I encourage our children to do likewise.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; So, as we begin 2009, I want to wish you a year of great successes, reaching goals that you set for yourself day by day. And I hope that your life will bring you and your child(ren) close as we all work together for the betterment of our world.</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; We have had a wonderful Fall season and now we go into the winter season with anticipation.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; The children loved learning about all there is to learn about Chanukah. The Chanukah program that we presented to ORT on December 17th was a delight to all as we sang through the history of the Holiday of Chanukah. From the Maccabbees&nbsp; to the baby spinning dreidels, from the rainbow menorah to the cute singing and dancing latkes ... fun was had by all. The children were also baking away and gave Chanukah cookies to all their grandmas and grandpas (as they like to call them). When each child received chocolate gelt from ORT, it was a sweet ending to a fun program.&nbsp; Thank-you, ORT, for your generosity.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; We are now looking forward to January when we will make our school an Arctic Wonderland.</p> <p><br />&nbsp;&nbsp; On January 29th, at 6:00 p.m. we will be having our &ldquo;Back to School Pajama Party Night.&rdquo; All are invited to come in their pajamas (including parents). There will be fun and information in every classroom.&nbsp; If you are on the Temple Board, this will be a great time to see what E.C.L.C. is all about. Just remember to wear your jammies.</p>

      • message<p>I get a lot of mail, perhaps not as much as some of you in other professional fields, but certainly I get my fair share. But what makes my inbox a little different is that I often receive mail that is clearly not intended for me. It&rsquo;s not that it isn&rsquo;t addressed to me personally (it is!), it&rsquo;s that the nature of the letter or periodical is clearly meant for a clergy person who is not Jewish. Sometimes I wonder: how do I get on some of these mailing lists? There must be a master list&nbsp; omewhere of rabbis, ministers, priests, and other clergy that is bought and sold. Despite the fact that these items are not intended for my Jewish eyes, I find myself thumbing through them&nbsp; onetheless. I am of the opinion that you can learn something from everything.</p> <p>One interesting periodical I recently received was Ministry, the international journal of the Seventh-day Adventist Ministerial Association. Maybe they think that because they observe the Sabbath on Saturday instead of on Sunday like most other Christians that we have something in common. But let me tell you, that is where the similarities end.</p> <p>At the back of the January 2009 edition was an article entitled &ldquo;Pastor&rsquo;s Pastor,&rdquo; clearly intended as a peer-to-peer advice column. At the beginning of the new year, the author offered the reader thirty-one specific topics &ndash; one for each day of January &ndash; to be prayed for. Seeing this I said to myself, &ldquo;I like to pray and I pray with the congregation each week. Let&rsquo;s see what others pray for.&rdquo; So I perused the article a little further.</p> <p>Here are the 31 topics: yourself, your spouse, your children; peace; unity; new believers; your preaching; the lost; change; singles; disgruntled; public servants; pray-ers; prodigals; neighbors; givers; women leaders; unloved saved ones; hope; war; discernment; national leaders; revival; maturity; holiness; teachers; vision; colleagues; elders; big cities; more workers; love; the end. That last topic was not an indication of the end of the list, but rather a topic itself, as the author&nbsp; suggested that the reader pray for the &ldquo;Second Coming.&rdquo;</p> <p>Under each topic heading was a few sentence explanation. As I read through them I found many of them that I agreed with, but others I found quite objectionable. Jews, of course, are not into proselytizing, while Seventh-Day Adventists are clearly into &ldquo;spreading the gospel.&rdquo; Jews also do not pray for &ldquo;the end;&rdquo; rather we focus on the here and now and spend our energy making our lives sacred in the present.</p> <p>Most of all, the article made me think about the language of my prayers beyond the words of the prayer book. During a service, the majority of our prayers are fixed and only a few minutes are given for silent meditation. The article made me think about what I pray for when the words come from my heart instead of from the page. So, now I ask you to think about what you pray for. Do you pray for peace, for your family, for health, for financial security? All of those are good topics and of course our prayers are usually determined by what is happening in our lives.</p> <p>As Jews, we rarely think about prayer except when we are in the synagogue. However, thinking about the nature and content of our prayers can be a useful and productive exercise. So, what is it that you pray for?</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Most of you will be reading this message in the first week of February, while I am writing it on Monday, the 26th of January. That is important because I want to let all of you know what happened last week and what will transpire this week.&nbsp; Last week the final drawings for Project Legacy were completed. Many of the drawings have already been sent to sub-contractors for bids. On Wednesday of this week (January 28) a small group of us will meet with the contractor and go over these bids. We will be comparing them to the estimate bids we received 6-8 months ago. As I explained last month, we fully expect these new bids to be at least 10-15% lower than the originals. I cannot tell you more about this as of this writing because we will not know any more for a couple of days.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; With the information from the contractors in hand and the fundraising numbers that we know, we will meet early next week with our bankers to get the construction loan information we need. Then we will put all that information together so that we finally have a very accurate picture of where we stand regarding the beginning of construction.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; As soon as we have all this information, you will have it. I will send a letter to everyone explaining, in detail, the recommendations of the Legacy committee. There will be time allowed to answer any and all questions that you have. If the consensus of the Legacy Committee is to recommend beginning the project, then we will call for a Congregational Meeting where we will lay out all the facts and ask for Congregational approval of two issues. Approval by you is needed to acquire a short-term construction loan. The building will be completed in 8-10 months, but many of our pledges are being paid over 5 years. The gap between what we will have collected and the amount we will need to pay at the end of construction is the amount we will need to borrow. Naturally, the more we have up front, the less we need to borrow and that will lessen the impact of the interest needed to satisfy the loan.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; The second issue which the congregation needs to decide is whether or not to give approval for a new lease with the Unitarian Congregation that has shared our building with us for almost 20 years. They have offered to pledge 0,000 towards Project Legacy in return for a longer lease. According to our Constitutional By-laws, any lease longer than 2 years must be approved by the congregation. They are asking for a 5-year lease and a 5-year option. On January 28, we will present details of the lease to our TBT Board for approval. Based on their approval, we will ask you all for your approval.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; As soon as any new information becomes available, it will be transmitted to you. I expect, and urge you to call with questions. Also, it is critical that ALL of you either attend the Congregational Meeting or send in your proxy. Everyone&rsquo;s vote is needed for these important decisions. Exciting times are ahead as we watch our &ldquo;leap of faith&rdquo; become the bricks and mortar of our future.</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; I recently attended a meeting for temple adminsitrators, hosted by the OC Jewish Federation. Shalom Elcott, CEO of the Federation, reported on the economic situation of various groups of institutions in our community. It was no surprise to hear that everyone is looking for ways to combine efforts, increase income, and decrease expenses. While the services we provide for Jewish OC remain constant, or are even more pressing, the ability to do so requires creativity in order to program/assist our fellow Jews in a low-budget fashion.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; What was surprising to hear was that Orange County is not experiencing the hardships to the same degree as other larger communities. It seems to have something to do with the relative affluence of our county, at least in certain areas (such as south OC). While the national statistic is that unemployment is nearing 10 percent, our community is not suffering quite so much.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; I have to say that on a personal note, I have felt relatively insulated by the economic downturn of recent months. Naturally I choked each time the price of gas jumped, and I watched as retailers that I once frequented shut their doors. On the other hand, I had food to put on the table, and I had a roof over my head. Volunteering at the Fullerton Armory on Christmas Eve was a sobering experience as I witnessed first-hand the existence of homelessness just a stone&rsquo;s throw from my home. And then I was hit where it really hurt.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; In 1978 I attended my first CAJE (Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education). Almost every year since then I have looked forward to this one week in the summer when Jewish educators from around the country (and beyond) converge on a college campus to learn from the experts, share ideas, hear entertainers, stay up all night, and enjoy the lifelong friendships that have been created by our annual attendance and networking throughout the year. In mid-January it was announced that there would be no conference this summer due to finances. My heart sank as I thought about the friends I would miss seeing and the workshops that would not be attended. My mind flashed on the Shabbat services I have attended and have helped to create for the attendees. The bad news did not stop though, with the conference. Within a few days it was further announced that the organization that hosts CAJE, the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education (also CAJE), will close its doors within a couple of months. I&rsquo;m a lifetime member of CAJE, and I always thought that &ldquo;lifetime&rdquo; referred to my lifetime rather than that of the organization! Funding has been severely cut over the last couple of years, and CAJE simply cannot afford to exist.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Needless to say, the emails and phone calls began flying across the country between CAJEniks who were eager to pick up the ball and create an alternative grassroots conference for &rsquo;09 to fill the void. At this point I don&rsquo;t know whether that will happen. I have offered to help in whatever way I can. The CEO of CAJE has told me that efforts are being made to merge with another educational organization so that the legacy of CAJE continues. In the meantime, this summer will be a reminder that economic hardships have hit the Jewish educational world. It&rsquo;s a sad statement of today&rsquo;s world.</p>

      • message<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Spring came early to E.C.L.C with installation of our artificial grass. It looks and feels sooo real. We caught some of the children digging for worms. Thank you Joe for helping us bring our vision into reality.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Did you hear it snowed in Fullerton! Well, only here at E.C.L.C this past Thursday for a special Snow Day. We extended our classroom winter themes with a French festival called Le Bonhomme de Neige. Special thanks to Dana Cadaval for making amazing cr&ecirc;pes with our children and to Will Fritz for reading and teaching French through stories. The kids enjoyed every moment of this day from beginning to end.</p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The staff looks forward to spending an evening with our parents during Back to School Night on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:00pm.</p>
