As we all know, this is a Jewish pre-school. We not only teach the Jewish holidays but we also teach from the Torah. This year we are going through the seven days of Creation and the children are having a great time learning all about the six days of creation {not to be confused with the seventh day because G-d rested}.

We have introduced the six days of Creation one day each month. We are now on Day Five … the birds in the sky and the fish in the ocean. Since this is such a broad subject we needed to make it more personal so we decided to use the red tailed hawk - a bird for the “birds in the sky.” This is the bird they see flying above them every day here at school. For “the fish in the sea” we used the common goldfish that some have as pets in their homes.

The children have had so much fun eating blue cotton candy to represent the clouds in the sky, or dipping a paper half way in an aquarium to represent dividing the sky from the sea. They truly have grasped the word “horizon.”

The children also used fruit and paint to print on paper to learn about when G-d created the trees of the earth.

They loved eating apple slices cut into crescent shapes with star shaped cheese on a golden Ritz cracker to represent Day Four when G-d created the sun, moon and stars.

We invite everyone to come down and see our Hall of Creation as it is progressing. It is a constant learning tool for the children as a reminder of what they have learned in the past few months. It also teaches them continuity in a very unstable world.

I find it such a privilege to be able to have the teaching of the Torah come alive to the children thousands of years later! Until next time … Shalom. Who knows what wonderful things will be shown in our Hall of Creation. You will just have to wait and see.
